The complete guide on how to trim sails and tune rigging for all conditions to make the boat sail faster and safer. A well-trimmed sailing boat is not only faster - it heels less, balances better and is more comfortable. Wear and load is reduced and expensive gear lasts : Magne Klann; Oyvind Bordal. ‎A beautifully, uniquely illustrated nautical guide to how to trim your sails and rig for maximum performance. With a revolutionary approach, this guide tackles the practical and realistic elements of tuning your boat, plus the theory of sail aerodynamics.

This was brought home to me at the Lindenberg 22 National Championships where I had a chance to see a very competitive fleet set up their rigs and I could compare sails, trim and the different sailors' interaction with rig tuning. The majority of competitors carried their rigs .   I have been looking for a book on sail trimming. So far I have come across the following books mentioned on various fora (including ybw): Sailpower (Peter Nielson) U Racing Trim (Bill Gladstone) Trim and Rig Tuning: A Captain's Quick Guide (Bill Gladstone) and Rig Tuning (Ivar Dedekam).

Sailing quickly isn’t just about winning races, it can be the difference between an uncomfortable and potentially dangerous night at sea and sleeping soundly, safely tied up at a dock. In this article I’m going to explain some of the sail trim and rig adjustment tips that I’ve learned that can help you go faster on upwind and on a reach. The second half of the book gives hints and tips on sail trim, sail handling, rig tuning and sail maintenance. Sailing, like everything else, has its own jargon. For those on the inside, the nomenclature can facilitate communication. But for the uninitiated, it has just the opposite effect — the specialized vocabulary creates a fog.

Lower shrouds should be set up so that the mast is straight.- Tuning Your Rig. The first objective in tuning a rig is to get the mast centered in the boat and standing straight. Once this is achieved, refinement of the tuning will improve the boat’s performance by changing the balance of the helm and, more importantly, by controlling sail shape.
